This introduces the idea of balancing a chemical equation to students through something they are (usually) familiar with: making a s'more. They should know about compounds and equations, but have little to no intro on balancing. This is to be worked on in pairs, and checked every two pages or so to ensure that they are on the right track.
Once they have understood the idea of balancing a recipe like an equation, they are pushed to balance a chemical equation.

This is an activity modeled after POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning). I had it evaluated by the POGIL group, and it scored high on most of their student interdependent and independent rubric.
