This unit can be used for any grade 3-6. I used this with small groups of readers along with my guided reading lessons. There are many trade books that can be used as small group readers. The book that I use is “The Wonder of Bald Eagles” by Eileen Foran. It has lots of amazing photos that the students enjoy.
It can also be used along with a science lesson about predators and animals. The lessons work well individually or as a journal for each student. The journal can be made as a full page or half sheet size. There is a cover page that can be colored for each size.
The journal coincides with the students watching an eagle cam. There are many options on the internet. There are many websites that stream live footage from an eagle nest. This is always the part that my students love the most. I have even had older students tell me that they remember watching the eagles and have continued to watch them in subsequent years. Eagles usually lay their eggs in late winter/early spring. We start to watch the eagle cam in early February.
