My kiddos always have a “BLAST” with this experiment. The students get to explore the fundamentals of projectile motion and how certain variables will affect how far an object will actually travel. I have my students do multiple tests, to see how the distance is altered:
-Different types of string (yarn, fishing line, etc.) – how does changing the string affect how far the balloon will travel? This also leads us into a discussion about friction.
-Different sizes of balloons – how does blowing up a balloon a little vs. putting a lot of air in a balloon, alter the distance that is traveled?
I also do an extension activity, where we alter the incline angle of the string, to see how that affects the distance that the balloon can travel.
Along with filling out this document, I always have my students journal their observations, findings, etc., along the way.
