Creativity and history combined into one great week long unit. This unit was inspired by the book Balloons Above Broadway by Melissa Sweet. This book is a William Allan White book nominee this year. Students will learn about Tony Sarg, the creator behind the balloon floats used at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. They will research the history of the parade from 1924 until today. As a culmination, to the unit they will create their own float for the parade based on a popular icon of today. This is a great unit to use before Thanksgiving but it would work any time of year. It can last a week or it is easily adaptable to last just a couple of days. Your kids will love this activity, mine did!
