This is an anticipation guide, which is used to introduce the background information, concepts, and vocabulary for a reading selection. Don't reinvent the wheel; use my hours of research to invigorate your students and make them eager to read this story.
When you download this file, please look at it in slideshow mode. I added a ton of cool formatting things, like pictures overlapped with other pictures and text that flies in, fades, out, or even changes color. The kids get really excited. I also have links at the end to websites where the kids can see videos of Alaska and how the Iditarod is done in commemoration of the 1925 race to deliver the diphtheria antitoxin.
This anticipation guide is an entire hour-long lesson, but you can also split it into several shorter lessons. Plus, when kids are reviewing the story for the test, you can have them go through the slideshow independently as a review.
