Product Description
Encourage your students to take their playing to the next level!

This is an incentive system for your instrumental classes. It can be used with older students for band ensembles, but it can also be used with younger students who are learning the recorder or similar instrument. It works easily with any syllabus. I love the fact that it is also a functional bulletin board display for the classroom that celebrates student achievement.

This incentive program is based on the established hierarchy of a traditional orchestra. There are 8 levels, requiring students to pass a playing test to advance at each level. You can assign whatever playing pieces are most appropriate for the grade and ability level of each of your classes.

Contents:
- labels for each level
- name cards for students
- poster with descriptions of each position within the orchestra
- poster for listing the pieces students must play for their tests
- sketch of suggested bulletin board set up
- student tracking sheet
- instructions/suggestions for use

How it works: Each class has a list of pieces they must be able to play solo, without errors, in order to advance to each level. Multiple grade levels can all be represented on the same board in your classroom since they each have their own required pieces. In order to get onto the bulletin board (“passing the audition”) the students must successfully play the first piece, at which time they receive their card. The card is then placed on the bottom level of the prepared bulletin board. After each successful playing test, the card moves up another level.

Rules: The playing tests are an optional part of my program. I use it mostly as a way of challenging students who may pick up music skills quickly. In a typical band classroom students are all playing the same pieces together, making it difficult to differentiate for different skill levels. This program provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate what they can do above and beyond. You can get a “B” in my class without participating in this, but the students know that it is very hard (if not impossible) to get an “A” in my instrumental classes, regardless of playing ability, if you don’t attempt the playing tests. This is a personal philosophy and teaching style – feel free to modify as you see fit.

I like to designate a specific amount of time (usually the last 10-15 minutes of each class) for playing test attempts. Students may only make one attempt per class (this encourages them to practice ahead of time). In order for a student to pass they must play the piece perfectly, without errors of any kind.
