In this STEAM activity, Band students and Geometry students will collaborate to learn how transformation geometry applies to marching band.
Marching bands use transformations to map out their show on the field. The coordinates that are used are similar to those that are studied in Geometry, and the football field is similar to the coordinate plane. In this interdisciplinary activity, marching band students are paired up with Geometry students in order to learn from each other how these two disciplines interconnect. The activity should take place after the Geometry students have some knowledge about transformations and the notation that is used. Think of this as an "in house field trip!"
This product includes a list of materials, specific procedure to follow, sample script to follow, a student worksheet, and helpful hints.
Students love the hands on, real life application of this activity! They also really enjoying meeting students they had never met before. "One thing I liked was getting to see the connection from geometry to marching band which I'm in both."
This product pairs well with some of my other transformation activities:
