Keep this music substitute lesson plan on file for an unexpected absence or use it for a fun motivational lesson for your band students or upper elementary students. This plan can be used with or without technology, although technology is strongly recommended. Access to the internet greatly enhances the lesson and is recommended. Your students will love seeing the engaging YouTube videos!
The entire lesson WITH technology is 50 min.
The entire lesson WITHOUT using technology (worksheets alone) is 20-30 min.
Students will learn about the President’s Own Marine Band as well as the life of John Philip Sousa. This lesson plan can be used any time of year to help you out in a bind, but it is especially fun to use for a Veteran's Day music activity or Memorial Day music activity. If using for a sub plan, the substitute does not need any prior musical knowledge. You’ll feel better knowing your students will still be learning about music when you’re gone!
