Have no fear...you can build your students' comprehension of the complexities of bank balance sheets with this engaging and multi-faceted activity!
This activity includes:
1) This "Bank Balance Sheets" Activity includes 4 parts. It begins with a colorful graphic organizer that asks your students to define the fundamental components of a bank balance sheet: liabilities ands assets. Students will then explain how banks are able to repay liabilities when they are requested, and also how assets are created from liabilities. Next, students will be provided with a simplified bank balance sheet and will be given the opportunity to calculate the impact of 3 separate demand deposits on liabilities and assets based a reserve ratio provided. Then, students will be provided with another simplified bank balance sheet and will be given the opportunity to calculate the impact of 3 separate withdrawals on liabilities and assets based a reserve ratio provided. Lastly, students will be provided with a simplified bank balance sheet for a bank that holds excess reserves. Students will evaluate the liabilities and assets of the bank and will be given the opportunity to calculate the impact of 3 separate withdrawals on liabilities and assets based a reserve ratio provided.

This activity can be used in many different ways in the classroom. Students can work independently, in pairs or this activity can be used as a jigsaw in order to facilitate a class wide discussion about the topics discussed in the activity.
