This unit for banned books is, by far, one of the most SUCCESSFUL unit's I have created and taught. This compressed zip file includes a selection of middle school appropriate banned books, a letter to send home to parents, a 'menu' of banned book projects that cover writing, holding debates, and action components (which were a HUGE hit at my middle school!). There are also a few additional items to help you on your banned book unit quest with your students. The unit also requires a persuasive essay, which students LOVE to write as they become so passionate about their selections and the right to read!
This unit not only will get your students engaged in learning about censorship and their rights, but will also challenge them to read thoughtfully and engage with texts in meaningful ways.
I presented this unit at an independent school conference here in the Pacific Northwest to middle and high school educators who were interested in bringing this type of learning into their classrooms.
