Product Description
Celebrate Banned Books Week (Sept. 24th-30th, 2017) OR stretch your students’ thinking about literary censorship anytime during the year!

This EDITABLE document is a unit that will work well for middle or high school since it is highly flexible for differentiation: students, parents, and teachers get to negotiate which book the child will read, check reading comprehension before/during/after, choose essay prompts, and reflect throughout the process.

In this unit, students will:
1. Choose a book that has been frequently banned and read it: guidelines are given to help students pick personally appropriate books.
2. Write a letter to their parents AND you (the teacher): students explain the project, the book, and why they chose it, and then they elicit permission to read it.
3. Analyze the book before, during, and after reading: use guiding questions to assess literal comprehension, do background research, and stay accountable during reading (without doing TOO much work and “killing the book” either!)
4. Write an argumentative essay: Students choose one of 5 prompts to write about their books, censorship in general, and multiple perspectives.

This 10-page download includes:
• Pre/Post test, with answer key, that not only gives a factual mini-crash course on censorship but also acts as an anticipation guide to gauge student opinions (and whether or not they change!)
• Unit Overview page, including directions for all 4 phases of the project and the essay prompts
• Before, During, and After Reading response pages
• Essay: brainstorm graphic organizer and rubric
• Both PDF and Editable copies of the project!

This unit accomplishes CCSS standards for informative writing (W.2), research (W.7), argumentative writing (W.1 and other sub-standards), and Reading Literature (RL.10).
