This is an 80+ page graphing unit that goes over bar graphs and picture graphs. This unit correlates 100% with Common Core standard MCC3.MD.3: Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one-and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in scaled bar and picture graphs.
This unit includes 5 days worth of whole group and small group lesson plans. Activities are as follows:
Day 1: Bar Graphs: Whole Group: Understanding bar graphs and using bar graphs to display data. Small Group: Constructing a bar graph.
Day 2: Bar Graphs: Whole Group: Taking a survey and using data to place information into a bar graph. Small Group: Continuing with constructing bar graphs and coming up with questions that will go along with each graph.
Day 3: Picture Graphs: Whole Group: Understanding picture graphs and using picture graphs to take information and display data. Small Group: Using data to construct your own picture graph as a whole group.
Day 4: Picture Graphs: Whole Group: taking a survey and constructing your own picture graph based on the data that you collect. Small Group: Continue making your own picture graph and answering and coming up with questions that correlates with your picture graph.
Day 5: Bar Graphs and Picture Graphs: Whole Group: Graph task cards. Students will review both kinds of graphs and answer questions in a task card/scoot format. Small Group: Give Bar Graph and Picture Graph Assessment.
This is a very comprehensive unit that includes many resources to ensure that students have a deep understanding of bar graphs and picture graphs as well as a complete understanding of Common Core Standard MCC3.MD.3.
