Problem solving will be no problem at all after your students complete the activities in this multiplication and division bar modeling packet.
Based on Singapore Math Principles and designed for Common Core Math instruction these activities focus on the development of problem solving strategies and logical/inferential thinking for students in grades 3 and 4 and include:
*Center 1 - Labeling Bar Models - 9 full-color student activity
cards (black and white copies also provided) with student
recording sheet and answer key.*
*Center 2 - Matching Bar Models - 9 pairs of cards, matching
story problem to model (color and black & white provided).*
*Center 3 - Sorting/Classifying Bar Models - 16 bar model
diagrams to sort by operation (multiplication/division).*
*Center 4 - Cut and Paste Bar Models - 9 story problems on three
student reproducibles (can also be used for homework).*
*Center 5 - Create Your Own - 12 bar model diagrams students
can use to create their own related story problems and student
The activities include over 24 original story/word problems. Math concepts depicted by labeled bar models included in the activities can be used in a variety of ways.
This math problem solving packet aims to strengthen students' comprehension of mathematical operations by using purposeful vocabulary intended to direct student thinking and engender discussion as opposed to the "cookie cutter" type problems that rely on overused clue words to drive mathematical thinking. Authentic assessments are moving away from the type of questions where students can simply identify words they have been taught to be associated with certain operations. This packet will help your students think through the problems and see the reasoning behind the math by visualizing patterns within the models.
Also included in this packet is a related technology link to further help your students develop independence with problem solving.
Be sure to check out all my other Grades 2, 3 and 4 Bar Model resources in my store covering ADDITION/SUBTRACTION, MULTIPLICATION/DIVISION and FRACTION concepts. They follow the same format as this resource and help prepare students for visualizing the concepts so they will be able to apply them independently.
