Product Description

Problem solving will be no problem at all after your students complete the activities in this addition and subtraction bar modeling packet. Activities are developed as a progression of skills.

Based on Singapore Math Principles and designed for Common Core Math instruction these activities focus on the development of problem solving strategies for part part whole concepts and logical/inferential thinking for students in grade 1 and include:

*Center 1 - Bar Model Addition - 9 full-color student activity

cards (black and white copies also provided) with student

recording sheet and answer key.* Focuses on relating the structure of bar models to addition scenarios and concepts.

*Center 2 - Bar Model Subtraction - 9 full-color student activity

cards (black and white copies also provided) with student

recording sheet and answer key.* Focuses on relating the structure of bar models to subtraction scenarios and concepts.

*Center 3 - Labeling Bar Models - 9 full-color student activity

cards (black and white copies also provided) with student

recording sheet and answer key.* Encourages students to apply skills and think about how to set up bar models to guide the problem solving process.

*Center 4 - Sorting/Classifying Bar Models - 16 bar model

diagrams to sort by operation (addition/subtraction).*

*Center 5 - Cut and Paste Bar Models - 6 story problems on three

student reproducibles (can also be used for homework).*

The activities include over 30 original story/word problems. Math concepts depicted by labeled bar models included in the activities can be used in a variety of ways.

This math problem solving packet aims to strengthen students' comprehension of mathematical operations of part part whole models by using purposeful vocabulary intended to direct student thinking and engender discussion as opposed to the "cookie cutter" type problems that rely on overused clue words to drive mathematical thinking. Authentic assessments are moving away from the type of questions where students can simply identify words they have been taught to be associated with certain operations. This packet will help your students think through the problems and see the reasoning behind the math by visualizing patterns within the models.
