Your students will love this barge building lesson, It can be done individually, or in teams. The power point offers background information on barges and how they are used today. Students will build and test their barge. they will also fill in a chart so they can compare their results with others.
This can be done in one one-hour session, but I usually take two to three days.
Day 1: Power point with the You tube links
Day 2: Individuals build their boats and test them. They also retest
by building two more boats and testing them. Students
finish filling out their chart, which they usually do during
their math lesson.
Day 3: Students put their information in the first row of the second
chart. They work with their tables to get the other student
results. As a class we discuss the results and make
conclusions about how their estimates compared with their
results from the first to the third boat.
STEM~ [How it is used in this lesson]
-Science: Estimating, testing, & recording
-Technology: The power point is the major part of the technology, unless you have students research about barges or Chad Pregracke. I have included a link to my website that students may use to find out more about Chad Pregracke. I have also included three links to YouTube videos about his work on his barge. It is very inspiring.
- Engineering: boat building
-Mathematics: Use of subtraction, multiplication and adding to fill in the chart.
