This product is a great addition to any economics unit! It will get kids out of their seats to really experience what it's like to barter and use currency.

Students will participate in two simulations. Both simulations are farm themed and include 30 "I want" cards plus 87 "I have" cards. A page of fake money is also included. This page can be copied to provide each student with currency for the second simulation.

In the first simulation, they will receive an "I want" card with a list of three items they will try to gain. They will also receive three "I have cards" with items they can use to barter. Students will trade with other students in the class by finding students who have something they want, and also want something they have. They will soon realize that bartering only works if BOTH parties are interested in trading.

In the second simulation, students will receive a new "I want" card and three new "I have" cards. This time, though, they will also received cash. Students will try to gain their "I wants" by using cash to pay the price on other students' "I have" cards. The hopefully will make the connection that it is much easier to trade using cash since the cash is useful to everyone.

After completing both simulations, students will complete a reflection sheet that asks them to list the pros and cons of each system of trading. They will then choose which one is their favorite and explain why.
