Activity incorporates elementary mathematics objectives (grades 3 - 5):
-Place Value (through thousands)
-Linear Customary Measurement (inches or convert to feet)
Students will work in teams to use as many base ten blocks as possible to build the tallest tower possible. (Recommend giving each team a container/small bucket of a several base ten blocks to include: units, tens, hundreds, and thousands blocks). Each team will have 20 minutes to build their Super Tower. If a team’s tower falls, the team will have the remaining time on the clock to rebuild. As teams build, they will record each base ten block being added to their tower with a tally mark in the correct place value. Teams will write the value of each set of tallies in their corresponding column. Teams will add each place value for a total number and record on the “Total” line below. To find the winning tower, teams will measure the height (inches, feet) of their team’s tower to determine the exact height. This is a great activity for team building and cooperative learning!
