The Base 10 Decimal Work Cards are designed to reinforce the concepts of Number and Operations, the first NCTM Standard. Students will need one set of the Base 10 Decimal Blocks to use with the work cards. Students will use their Base 10 Decimal Blocks and Work Cards to identify and build decimal numbers, add and subtract with and without regrouping, and compare. Children will work with numbers from the ones to the thousandths place. The cards are arranged in a step pyramid format. Each card has four color-coded levels on the front side and four non-colored levels on the reverse. The back is ideal for teachers to photocopy for students to complete independently after doing practice problems on the front side of the card. Teachers can easily direct students to the appropriate level of problem by referring to the background color of the level.
Each place is named under the answer spaces to help students transfer their solutions from the place value mat to the work card’s answer spaces. Base 10 Decimal Blocks will help students grasp the difficult concepts of grouping and regrouping by tens and the visual representation of decimal values. For students to understand the steps involved in using Base 10 Decimal Blocks and Work Cards, the teacher will need to demonstrate several examples at each level before the students use the blocks or work cards. Teachers will need to guide most students through the concepts of regrouping in the earlier stages of learning decimals.
