Grasping the base ten number system is one of the hardest concepts for some children. These activities or games can be modified and used in many different ways from whole group to small group and individually. The activities allow for practice and review, but also remediation and extension.
When I first created this idea, I really wanted to review the concept of making numbers and the order and location of each number on a place value chart. I truly had no idea how I would be reaching other standards such as listening and speaking and the social skill of working together. My students had a lot of fun with this, but I quickly realized that students had to listen, and they had to communicate with their teammates to make the right number. Ultimately, this is a team building activity.
