Students will research a favorite baseball team, calculate player statistics, calculate percent change in stats, graph player statistics, calculate percent wins for a team over a number of years (and convert this into fraction and decimal forms), compare wins/losses between two baseball teams, calculate probability of a team winning in an upcoming season, and use the internet for researching.
Students are asked to use ExCel or Google Sheets to record their information and create their graphs (but could also do this easily using graph paper). Students are also required to explain their thinking and calculations in order to additionally meet Common Core standards.
This file is in a Word doc format, so once downloaded you could make changes as needed to fit your grade level (example: having students calculate specific probability in upper grades, remove percentages in lower grades, etc.)
This project was originally meant as an independent extension project for my advanced math students in 5th grade.
