Basketball Math Champions (BMC) is an exciting sports based, math game that improves students’ math skills and meets the common core math standards for “procedural skills and fluency”. Students enjoy playing a competitive, fun and challenging sports game. Three team pairings play, with team 1 and team 2 competing while the third team acts as the umpires. The teacher or students pick the math model to be used in the game and the teams roll the dice, shout the answer, hit the ball, fill the bases or fly, ground or strike out, according to the rules and regulations of the game. The game builds the students confidence as they improve their math accuracy and efficiency. All teams are first trained as referees in order to assure understanding of both the rules and behavioral expectations. The winning team will play the umpires while the losing team becomes the umpires (ie. see the game set up diagram sheet).
Teachers can use the game in many ways: as a group activity, to reinforce the learning of a math model, as a reward at the end of the week (we call it “game day”), as the perfect mechanism to get students who need extra work to improve procedural and fluency skills, etc.
The game also teaches important social skills as the students must learn to follow rules and collaborate while they have fun competing. I’ve found that for best results the class must first be differentiated. It is very important to pair students with similar math skills for each math model selected.
This game package includes 12 pages as follows (including this page):
1. The Game Directions pamphlet with math examples and Rubric
2. The rules sheet, hitting percentage and score board
3. 8.5 “ by 11”, 11” by 17” and 18” by 18” enlarged game files and full game versions (used for transparencies, laminating or game boards)
4. Dice templates, game set up sheet and column math worksheets.
All Sport Math Champions Games are designed and created in Gimp and /or Inkscape and have been tested with great success in the classroom. The teacher can supply the basketball playing piece and the dice or use my dice template (included).
