Are you ready to bring the fun and excitement of a homerun derby into your classroom? Or would your students prefer to play a head-to-head game of baseball? If so, here are two enjoyable baseball games for your students to practice the skill of calculating the mean, median, mode, and range. Just print and play!
Three different sets of recording sheets and game cards are included on this file. I prefer to use the first set as an introductory, whole-class activity, and then use the second and third sets as a learning center for the remainder of the season or month. An additional file with Sets 4, 5, & 6
is available for purchase to extend the fun well into the season.
This whole-class activity or learning center is perfect during the months of the baseball season. Students play by solving problems on game cards or recording sheets, as determined by the amount of time the teacher has available in preparation for this fun activity. Once a problem has been solved, students then self-check their answers using the provided answer keys, and if correct, they roll dice to determine a baseball action. These baseball actions are limited to either homeruns or outs when playing Homerun Derby. When playing a game of head-to-head baseball, these actions can range from hits that move base runners around the baseball field, to the extremely rare triple play!
This file contains:
●suggested procedures and management for both methods of play (whole-class and learning center)
●1 Homerun Derby game board
●1 Head-to-Head Baseball game board
●2 action charts for Homerun Derby (one with 6 different baseball outcomes, and one with 16 different baseball outcomes)
●2 action charts for Head-to-Head Baseball (one with 6 different baseball outcomes, and one with 16 different baseball outcomes)
●3 calculating the mean & median recording sheets with corresponding answer keys for the students to record their answers to the various questions they will solve during the game (and for teachers to have documentation)
●3 calculating the mode & range recording sheets with corresponding answer keys for the students to record their answers to the various questions they will solve during the game
●3 sets of 16 calculating the mean & median question cards and 16 corresponding answer cards
●3 sets of 16 calculating the mode & range question cards and 16 corresponding answer cards
●1 set of blank recording sheets and answer keys

Your students are certain to have a fun and enjoyable time playing Homerun Derby or Head-to-Head Baseball, all the while sharpening their ability to calculate the mean, median, mode, and range in a data set.
