The activities in Bases Loaded provide practice with short vowel sounds and short vowel phonograms (word families).
In one activity, students match picture cards with the correct short ‘vowel sound’ bases.
In a second activity, students match onsets (beginning sounds) to the correct rime (word ending).
To play as a game, activity 3, each player has a baseball diamond. The cards are held in a container. Students take turns picking a card. If the card matches the player’s diamond, the card is placed on a base. If the card does not match, it is placed back in the container. Play continues until a player loads the bases.
The goal in both activities is to load the bases.
The activities can be used for independent practice, center work, small group instruction, and homework.
