In high school, every single math concept has a basis in algebra and if students cannot grasp simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division rules when solving an unknown, their lack of understanding will make future concepts impossible to learn. I designed this worksheet for my grade 9 students to revise and relearn the concept of solving an unknown, to get them to understand the process of using SADMOB (when you have an answer to an equation, but an unknown value to solve, BOMDAS doesn’t apply, instead we use SADMOB!).
This resource may seem simple. And it is. But it is exactly what I needed to help my students. Yours will benefit too.

This one-sided worksheet contains 264 basic operation questions, using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to solve an unknown. The questions vary in layout, so students can practice the following equation forms for each operation:
… a + 3 = 5
… 3 + a = 5
… 5 = a + 3
… 5 = 3 + a
Instructions for use
Simply print and distribute! There is one example for each operation for you to write up on the board, so students can see you model the question.
Suggestions for use in the classroom
I would ask students to glue the sheet in their books. They would then have to rewrite the question in their books and show full working out for each question. The premise of this worksheet isn’t to test their mental arithmetic (though that’s a bonus), it’s to get students to understand how to solve an unknown.
