Basic Geometrical Optics introduces the properties of light and a history of light discoveries, aspects of vision, and the history of optical instruments including the Hubble Space Telescope.
The unit also investigates devices that use the refractive properties of light and the six basic ways images are formed by converging lenses. A hands-on investigation leads students through each of the six cases. Data sheets accompany the investigation to compare the results with expected mathematical outcomes, and finish with a Quiz (& Key).
Light can be studied in a variety of ways. Optics is only one of them. The concept of optics investigated in Basic Geometrical Optics Unit is refraction.
