These four reproducible "Basic Multiplication Facts Animal Poems" provide extra practice for children with basic multiplication facts in a fun and interesting way. To decipher the poem on each worksheet, the children must first correctly solve each basic multiplication fact, then match its product's corresponding letter to the same product listed in the poem grid. A special emphasis is given to "square" products, as well as products of the usual "nasties" such as "6 x 9" and "7 x 8."
Once deciphered, "The Polar Bear Cub's Poem" reads:
"My underwear's thick
And made out of fat
To keep me from freezing,
"The Zebra's Poem" reads:
"I always end up last
And this is what I think:
Whoever made up A-B-C
Order really STINKS!"
"The Sloth's Poem" reads:
"What takes you a minute
Might take me hours,
But while you are busy
I'm smelling the flowers!"
Also included in this packet is my original freebie, "The Puppy's Poem:"
"There's fleas in my ears
And fleas on my toes
And even a few
Up my nose, I suppose!"
In addition, I've included answer sheets for all four poems.
Aside from pure carelessness, the chances for student error are slight, being the poem itself provides a check against any multiplication discrepancies. What's more, this handout is extremely simple and quick to both review and grade.
These quatrains can be used in class, as homework, in math centers, to fill in a few minutes at the end of a class period, or as extra practice for those students still struggling with their facts (as well as those students who just never bother to take the time to learn their "boring" facts.) Even better, they are fun to complete, and don't be surprised if you find your students asking you for more. (Imagine that! Students asking for more multiplication work!)
I thank you for taking the time to preview this product and hope you are able to put it to good use. Moreover, I hope it provides some benefit and enjoyment to your students.
