Basic Orienteering Skills is designed to develop locomotor skills, map skills, and space and time skills as they relate to orienteering. By using a variety of maps, the student's ability to "find the way" is developed.
Since most schools are limited in the area that they have to run an orienteering unit, activities in small areas as well as modified activities have been included. Also, compasses are not required.
The unit covers the following topics: Overview, Specific Objectives of Orienteering, Details to Consider Before Teaching Orienteering, The Basis for the Selection of the Content and Methods for Teaching Orienteering (Knowledge of the Growth and Development Patterns of Children, Knowledge of the Ways in Which Children Learn, Knowledge of Orienteering Skills), Lesson Planning, Skill Development, Potential of Orienteering for Social Development, Activities Utilizing Orienteering Skills, Appendices.
