Product Description
I use this checklist/"test" when teaching "Basic Paragraph Training Boot Camp" at the beginning of the school year with my 6th and 7th graders. I've discovered over the years that some of them are more adept at nailing paragraph structure and formal writing conventions (and general neatness expectations, like turning one's paper the right way), and we needed to practice those expectations together and be tested on them. At the end of this brief unit, I give all my students a "Basic Paragraph Test", which they must pass to ensure they know how to write a proper paragraph. This pdf has two versions (one simpler one I use in 6th grade, and a more advanced one for 7th grade) of the checklist and grading rubric/system of the test.

The test is simple: the students are given a piece of notebook paper and the "Basic Paragraph Training Checklist" (this pdf), and are given a topic/prompt or question to answer. The Powerpoint that I use to teach paragraphs (available from my TPT store at the link below) includes some of the test questions I have given students over the years. I have students use the checklist as they work, and then staple it to their paragraph, so that I use the same checklist to grade the tests. Before the test, we practice writing and "grading" our own paragraphs for days before I administer the graded "test".

After the first few weeks, once everyone has practiced writing paragraphs with the checklist, and then taken and passed the test, my students know my expectations for their writing (and for their writing in their other classes as well).

This .pdf File is "Boot Camp"/Army themed, and may be used by itself, or in conjunction with the "Basic Paragraph Training" .ppt Powerpoint File which can be purchased from my TPT store at: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Basic-Paragraph-Training-and-Test-for-Middle-Schoolers-3390166

When teaching my Paragraph Training unit, I also give my students a "cheat sheet" of transitions, and ways to organize their examples/details in the body of their paragraph. That "cheat sheet" is also available from my TPT store at: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Expository-Transitions-Ordering-Examples-Printable-Paragraph-Writing-3390205

NOTE: This file has two different versions of the same assessment--one simple, one advanced.
