"This intervention program was designed based on a need in my 7th grade classroom. I found that when teaching operations with rational numbers and solving algebraic equations, my students struggled most with basic skills and operations. Each student had his/her own unique weaknesses that impeded him/her from reaching their potential in my math classroom. Many of my students had learning gaps from childhood sicknesses, transferring schools, or other unfortunate causes. I needed a way to identify each student’s weakness and then effectively fill in the gap.
I identified the 20 most essential basic skills and operations that students should know to be successful in my class. From this list of skills, I developed assessments to identify weaknesses and monitor student growth, small group plans/resources for remediation, and independent student pages for practice.
However, all of this remediation must occur quickly and in the context of teaching my required curriculum. For this, a number system was created. Each basic skill was grouped by the type of number used (whole , fraction, decimal) and assigned a number. For example, numbers 1-5 deal with whole numbers. Numbers 6-13 contain all of the fraction problems . Numbers 14-19 practice decimal operations and number 20 is a percent problem. The numbered system and student forms allow students to take control of their learning and keep the program organized. With this system, students are able to grade their assessments, record their progress, identify their area of weakness, place themselves into groups, and get the independent student page that relates to their identified weakness."
