The main reason for thermodynamics is to understand how we can use heat to help us perform certain actions via machines and devices; in essence, how we get work from heat.
In this third chapter, we finally get introduce to the concept of heat as well as doing work through thermal processes. Particular attention should be given to the energy equations, both for non-flow and steady flow, as they form the mathematical basis for the calculation of the amount of work we get from a heat engine based on the amount of heat input or the amount of work we need to do on a device (like a refrigerator) to get heat output. We end the topic with an analysis of different apparatus like a boiler or nozzle in thermodynamic terms and formalize the relationship between heat and temperature through the concept of specific heat.
