This is a great rubric to use in middle school language arts classes, but it could be used in any content area. I've used it for several years myself. When grading an essay, I circle or highlight any criteria for which points were deducted. In the boxes to the right, I write the number of points earned in each section. (You could choose to write number of points deducted in each section instead.) In the box at the bottom, I write the student's final grade. The last section gives me the opportunity to challenge students to focus on another aspect of their writing to improve their future work. The breakdown of the rubric helps me assess the strengths and weaknesses of each individual student. I also look at the entire class's rubrics to see if there are weaknesses across the board that need to be addressed with further instruction. I hope you find it as useful as I do. God bless you, and thank you for the work you do! Happy grading!
