The purpose of this activity is for students to compare the points scored by 3 popular basketball players (Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Rajon Rondo). The data is from October 2012 to November 10, 2012. Aligned to Common Core Standards 7 SP.B.3 & 4.
Students will create a comparison box and whisker plot that contains the data for the 3 players and will then answer 8 analytical questions. The questions focus on comparing the range, interquartile range, medians and upper quartiles for the 3 players. Three questions focus on being able to interpret the percentages represented by the box and whisker plot quartiles. A final question asks the students to make a decision about which player they would like to have on a team and to justify their choice by making general comparison statements about the graph as a whole.
This activity will take up one class (40 minutes) and is a practice activity following direct instruction on the construction of box and whisker plots. It can be used as an exploration activity for comparison practice if students know how to construct box and whisker plots already. It could also be used as a station or center activity or an assessment.
