Basketball Fantasy Project Based Learning Unit
Get your students pumped up about reading informational text and using charts to collect statistics! This project based learning unit will engage students while they learn! This PBL Unit was created by Sarah Allred (MaEd, NBCT) using the Common Core State Standards and North Carolina Essential Standards. It was written based on 6th grade standards, but can be adapted for grades 5-8.
The unit includes integration of reading, writing, speaking, math, and technology skills as well as several 21st Century Skills.
Materials in this download include: a news announcement video introducing the project, a vocabulary list, teacher directions, student handouts, web links, and instructional videos demonstrating how to use and work with an Excel workbook, as well as how to find and collect basketball player stats.
Project Scenario: Students have been selected as the owner/coach of a new collegiate basketball team. They will select players in a draft, select a team name and mascot, design uniforms, and keep stats for their team. Their goal is to build a team that is the most successful in stats at the end of a predetermined time period and then give a short speech explaining why they should be selected as the new team owner/coach. The culminating activity for the unit is a press conference or awards program where team stat winners are announced.
