This free lesson pack is intended for teachers of Grades 4 to 6 History or Language Arts. This lesson about Bastille Day talks about the history and importance of the day in France and how it is celebrated. The lesson can be taught with little to no preparation. All necessary materials are included in the pack and can be used independently of each other. Simply print what you need, make your copies and go to class.
The lesson pack consists of:
1.) 4-page worksheet with:
a) a brief warm-up to get students talking about France
b) an short article about the history and origins of Bastille Day
c) a short quiz to check reading comprehension
d) a discussion about important holidays to get your class talking
e) a crossword based on vocabulary used in the article
f) a class activity where students interview each other
g) a writing activity with a prompt. Can be used for in-class writing or assigned as homework.
2.) A 12-page MS powerpoint to help the teacher guide the students through the worksheet activities. This is an optional component of the lesson pack and is not required for teachers to use the worksheets.
3.) An audio file (MP3) of the article in the worksheet being read aloud. This can be used to help LD or lower-level readers with shadow reading or listening to appropriate rhythm, pronunciation, and tone.
