This pack contains a non-fiction reading prompt about bats as well as 7 assessment questions. These questions contain several short answer, a multiple choice, and some extended response.
We are required to create assessments for reading that use fiction or non-fiction prompts and that ask a variety of questions. Most of these assessments are worth 10-12 points and students must achieve an 80% or higher in order to achieve mastery. We use the data from these assessments to drive and inform our instruction as well as to determine our intervention groups.
We chart student progress on these assessments using individual student data folders. To make these folders, we use two pocket folders with a blank graph glued onto one side (over the pocket) and we put the tests into the other pocket. We keep one of these folders per quarter. Students date and write the title of the prompt under the bars and then color in their score on the bar graph as they complete these assessments. We go over them in class after I check them.
We have found that our students can gain background knowledge as we test their reading skills and strategies.
