This excellent unit on bats combines a nonfiction National Geographic Kids book, “Bats”, with related reading and writing activities. Your students will become excited about bats as they practice a variety of target skills. There are close read, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and short answer activities. Your students will enjoy writing a poem, a letter and a fact story. In addition, there are vocabulary games, a word search, a fact story and a drawing activity. Finally, eleven short answer activities are included, each one based on one chapter of the book. Wrap your study of bats up by having students make a “Bat Hat” or create a glittery bat craft project. To use these materials, the teacher can project a single copy of the book “Bats”. They can show it to the whole class or use several copies with small groups or in a partner book study. Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and Scholastic Books have all carried copies of this book. If funding is an issue, teachers might approach their administrator, their reading specialist or parent association. Your students will go “batty” for nonfiction when you use this targeted reading unit!
