The bats are back! This book companion is designed to be used with Bats at the Library by Brian Lies. Six activities are included that target a variety of language skills including: phonological awareness, receptive language, expressive language, and vocabulary.

Go Batty for Rhymes: Flip all the cards upside down on the table. Students take turns trying to find rhyming matches. Student with the most matches wins.

What am I reading about? Riddles!: What are the kids reading about? Student draws a card and student/teacher reads the riddle. If student is correct they get to keep the card. Find a bookworm and lose all your cards! Student with the most cards at the end wins.

Go Batty for Phoneme Deletion: Work on phonological awareness skills using these phoneme deletion cards. Student deletes initial phoneme in a word to make a whole new word. Go Batty for phonological awareness!

Book themed WH Questions: Students practice answering WH ?s that are inspired by the book

Batty Bingo: Three different bingo boards are included. Read the prompts provided (“Find a word that rhymes with…”). Student must find a word that rhymes with the given word. Students then discuss the rhyming words they found.

Librarian says!: Students must follow the librarian’s directions! This activity features temporal and conditional directions that are inspired by the book. Student draws a card and follows the direction. If they are correct they get to keep the card. If they find a librarian they get to take an extra turn!
