This activity is for students with dyslexia or students needing phonics work. It is specifically for practice with short vowels. The words used are one-syllable (closed syllables). Students should know basic consonants, consonant digraphs (sh, th, wh, ch, ck), and know or be working on short vowels.
This file consists of:
Page 1 - Cover Sheet
Page 2 - Directions
Page 3 - Words used in activity
Page 4-6 - Large cards for each vowel sound
Page 5-12 - Word cards (a total of 48 cards)
Page 13 - A worksheet to be used as students do the activity
Lay out the large vowel cards. Students draw a word card and practice reading it with each of the short vowels. They decide which vowel sound makes a real word and matches it to the large vowel card. They can also list it on their worksheet under the correct vowel.
This can be a type of sort that you do with a small group of students. In addition, students can use it in a center, or it can be a game, seeing who gets a word with each vowel sound first.
