Battle notes promotes literacy skills by having students read paragraphs of information aloud to their partner while their partner listens. The partner uses what they hear to complete their matching paragraph by filling in the blanks on their copy of the information. This modified version of guided notes helps with reading fluency, vocabulary, and spelling in addition to the critical skills of listening and speaking. It also engages students in their acquisition of the information and aides in the retention by having them reading and listening to a peer. Think about it like guided notes meets old school battleship--the partners cannot see each others’ papers and must rely solely on the information given to them by their teammate.
This set of Battle Notes is centered around Rocks. It covers their major types as well as how they are classified/formed. It is ideal for a younger student (up to 8th grade) or as a brief introduction for older students.
