This activity includes 6 versions of game boards for 3 sets of words, and recording sheets for each word list. I use this activity as an independent ELA center. It is also great to reinforce number recognition! Print and laminate playing cards. (I also laminate the recording sheets to use with dry erase, but you can copy them as consumables.) My students use clipboards for their game sheets. FULL COLOR and PRINTER FRIENDLY versions included!
Player 1 is the “guesser” and uses the recording sheet, and Player 2 is in charge of the “word map” (game board). Player 1 chooses a number square. Player 2 says “hit” or “miss”. If the square is a “hit” (contains a letter), Player 2 tells Player 1 what letter is in the square. Player 1 records that letter in the corresponding square on the recording sheet. If the square is a “miss” (does not contain a letter), Player 1 crosses out the square so it is not guessed again. Player 1 continues to guess squares until all the words are built. Words are checked off on recording sheet as they are completed. I instruct my students to circle and read each word as they are completed! After all words are built, players switch roles!
