If you haven't had a "Battle of the Book type competition in your classroom or school, this is a great way to encourage reluctant readers and improve comprehension and retention. It is a pretty easy set-up...just choose the titles you want to use and then get the questions for those books and other helpful forms and information here for setting up your competition. Part of having a competition, is winning prizes. I used money from my Boxtops for Education funds to buy gift certificates from local bookstores. You may want to enlist parent organizations to help with the prizes or perhaps your library budget has money allocated to this. For the teams who were put out early in the competition, I used this Certificate of Participation for each student.
