To encourage our high achieving and GATE students to read more challenging books every Spring, we invite students to read the following 5 books and participate in a fun, Jeopardy game against the other classes in our grade level: The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, Zorgamazoo, Don't Know Much About the Solar System, The Lemonade War, and Toys Go Out. We introduce the challenge at the beginning of our Read Across America Program and allow two months for students to read all 5 books. Every student that reads all five books is placed on a team and creates a team sign on butcher paper. My class has enjoyed creating a theme and dressing up in costumes for the day of the competition every year. One year, they were surfers and wore wet suits and board shorts. Last year, my students all dressed up as Greek gods and goddesses. We invite parents and other grade levels to come watch. Teams are allowed to work together to choose their question and discuss their answer. Team members take turns speaking into the microphone as our MC moves from group to group. It is a fun learning experience for everyone that participates!
(The challenge is open to all students, not just GATE and high achieving students.)
