Battle of the Books is a fun reading contest where teams of students work together to read 20 teacher-chosen books in time for a game show-style competition!
My version of this game is LOW PREP for busy teachers! You choose 20 books from your own classroom/school library...no hunting down specific books! Using the included question cards students generate their own questions about each book as they read, AND supply the answers...no need for you to pre-read all the books and come up with questions for the battle!
Included in this packet are:
-Teacher directions for simple preparation
-Rule sheet to copy or display for students
-Team Record Sheet so captains can track which books the team has read so far
-Sample Team Record Sheet pre-filled for easy understanding
-Question cards for students to supply quiz questions and answers for each book (you choose a few per book to ask during the battle)
-List of suggested books by reading level
All pages are editable in Word, so that you can customize with book titles and other wording of your choice! (Uploading an editable Word doc to TpT is tricky--I had to delete some rows from the book list tables in order for them to appear normal in preview, but you can easily add or remove rows, change fonts, customize with your name and dates, add clip art, etc.).
This 2-3 week activity is one of the most engaging and memorable ones I do in my classroom each year! Your reluctant readers will be excited, and all of your kids will be exposed to quality books of your choice while practicing Common Core skills of asking and answering questions about each book. I hope you try it and enjoy it as much as we do!
