Looking for an engaging introductory lesson on the Battle of the Ironclads? Get your students working collaboratively to investigate primary sources as they try to determine what occurred between the Monitor and the Merrimac! This is a great opportunity not only to teach the battle itself, but also to discuss how/what we learn from primary sources.
This activity is discussion-based and allows students to utilize a number of critical thinking skills as they engage with primary sources. They'll work in small groups to analyze 5 different primary sources and try to form a hypothesis about the battle. After sharing their thinking with the class, they will debrief with a short reading passage and discussion.
Included are the following materials:
- teacher notes with full lesson plan
- 5 primary source images
- hypothesis worksheet
- Battle of the Ironclads reading information sheet
This activity supports Virginia Studies VS.7b.
