In the four presidential elections so far in this century (2000–2012), 5 states (aka the battleground or purple states) have essentially determined who became president. Most states were either solidly Democratic (Blue) or solidly Republican (Red). But in these five states (Colorado, Florida, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia) each party won twice. Those states are the focus of this simulation.
Your students will run a short presidential campaign and then on “Election Day” in the simulation, they vote in one of those states. Using the forms and the Excel spreadsheet provided, you will be able to calculate the Popular and Electoral College (EC) votes to see who would win this year if it were up to your class.
