This game of Battleship is designed to help students practice calling out (x, y) coordinates on a Cartesian plane.
The game also includes the following "upgrades", to help students practice other essential skills:
- Horizontal torpedoes (used to teach graphs of "y =" format);
- Vertical torpedoes (used to teach vertical graphs of "x =" format);
- Diagonal torpedoes (used to teach graphing of "y = mx + b" format);
- Depth charges (used to teach +/- values, in relation to (x, y) coordinates).
I've found that allowing my students to play this for the first 10 minutes of class against a classmate helped improve their skill level and retention of concepts better than any other technique I've tried.
There are many other ways the game can be modified to suit your needs!
