This sample contains the game board for the short "a" sound. The bundle includes all 5 short vowel sounds: a, e, i, o, & u. It can be found here: *** Phonics Battleship for All 5 Short Vowel Sounds ***
This activity is played like the classic game Battleship. Students are paired up and each has a laminated copy of the game board on a clipboard. Students take turns making CVC words from the green initial sounds and the red short vowel finals. Dry erase markers work well for drawing the boats and marking hits and misses.
This is perfect for students who have grasped the sounds of consonants and need to begin to move toward putting those sounds to work in words. Repetition is key for this activity! Having students write their "misses" as full words in the "water" is a good twist for those learners who are ready for more writing.
Also note, while many of these combinations are real words, some are also nonsense words. The purpose of this activity is not for vocabulary building, but to practice sounding out CVC words.

is a good start! ***
