I use this activity to review and assess understanding of the rules for transformations. In addition, it is an exercise in following directions! I give them very little instruction as I want them to read through and complete the steps as directed!
First, I have them complete Step 1 (apply the rules) and then I check their answers BEFORE they move onto Step 2. If they make mistakes on Step 1, it will affect the final product (and not in a good way).
Once all of their ordered pairs correct, they complete Steps 2 - 5 individually.
I use this as a graded assignment/assessment!
Objectives of this activity:
To correctly use the rules for translating and rotating figures when given the coordinates.
The apply rules for translating a figure (given in coordinate notation).
To know and apply the rules for rotating a figure 90º, 180º, and 270º
To create a coordinate plane.
To understand the difference between the original figure and its image.
To plot points on a coordinate plane.
To reflect a given figure (several figures, actually) over the y-axis.
Once all of the steps are complete, they should have a picture of a pretty cute bat!! It’s perfect to use at Halloween, but it can certainly be given any time!
