Kid-tested strategies for checking the direction of b’s, d’s, and p’s during writing. There are several memory aids out there for which direction b and d are written, but these are some that have been the most effective for my students. Usually when they are writing, they are holding a pencil with their right hand, so without needing to set it down they can quickly look at their left hand and check to make sure the b is facing the correct way. At first, emphasize the letter b only, and then when students are firm with that they can recognize that d goes the other way.
