Far too many students don't know how to determine the meaning of unknown words they encounter by using the context of the sentence. This 31 slide interactive PowerPoint presentation helps you address that problem by providing your students with a clear, easy to follow process on how to become effective "Word Detectives". Extensive classroom experience has shown that this skill will significantly enhance students' reading skills, particularly those of struggling readers.
The presentation goes through each of the following types of clues that authors typically use:
Restatement or Synonym clues, Definition/Explanation clues, Contrast/Antonym clues, and
Inferring through details given in sentences.
Each of the 4 parts has several examples and lists of signal words which could help students to find the meaning. At the end of each section there is a slide which could be used for students to practice with either in groups, pairs or on their own.
Also included at the end of the PowerPoint presentation are five sheets which can be printed for use as support materials:
-The first page can be cut and pasted into a word document and given to students as a summary or review page.
-The next two of the pages go along with the "You Try It" slides and could be given to each individual student or groups to fill out as you work through the slides.
-The final two pages include a post test and answer key that goes with the final few slides: Practice using Context Clues.
